Abstract
Background: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (2TDM) is a non-communicable disease that is now a top 10 cause of death globally and has affected the population of the Republic of Palau. There are different types of Diabetes, however, this research will focus on Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus impacting the people of Palau where approximately 20% of the adult population have Type 2 Diabetes and about 40% of others with prediabetes. This indicates that Type 2 Diabetes is becoming an issue that needs to be addressed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study aims to examine the relationship between self-management and quality of life in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus in Palau. The goal is to learn how patients in Palau manage their diabetes and how it affects their life satisfaction.
Method: This research is a cross-sectional study done in Belau National Hospital and Community Health Center with a total of 136 participants. Surveys were given to the participants awaiting their turn to visit the physician. The data analysis was done using SPSS version 29. The study was non-parametric and analyzed using Spearman-Rank correlation, Mann-Whitney U Test, and Kruskal-Wallis Test to identify the relationship between demographic variables, self-management, and quality of life. Hierarchal multiple linear regression was used to predict quality of life.
Results: A total of 136 participants with a mean age of 57.54 (SD±12.16). The majority of participants were female (62.5%), and most of them were obese (55.1%) and overweight (30.9%). There was no significant relationship between the overall score of diabetes self-management and quality of life.
Conclusion: This study concludes that even though there was no significant relationship between self-management of Type 2 Diabetes and the quality of life of patients in Palau. Many factors could be considered if this was to be replicated. It would help to understand how educated are Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in proper diabetic diets, and the availability of healthy foods, and to utilize different tools to better understand how it affects different ages, gender, and education level. There are many ways to replicate this study and should be considered.
