The rapidly aging population has been posing challenges to social resources worldwide. Older people who choose to age in place face many psychological problems such as social isolation and loneliness, which must be carefully addressed. Companion robots or socially assistive robots demonstrate strong potential to address the mental needs of this population. Although studies on companion robots for older adults have reported positive findings, the real-world implementation in this field remains slow, mainly because the commonly used robots poorly match older people's requirements. This study explored family caregivers’ perceptions of the requirements of companion robots for older adults living in their homes. A qualitative approach was adopted using video watching and interviews to derive opinions from six caregivers. The findings of this study are that most participants were open to accepting robots to provide companionship for their older families and no preference was shown towards the appearance of robots. In addition, the cost of the device appears to be a common concern in the real-world adoption of robots in the home environment. In terms of robot size, smaller and lighter devices were preferred for home use. As for the additional function requirements of the companion robots, apart from the safety detection that achieved the consensus, the participants had various opinions. Due to the diverse requirements of home-living old adults, a one-type-fits-all robot solution will be difficult to achieve. I, therefore, suggest robot manufacturers adopt a modularization design and development and apply a lease-to-own business model to promote the business. It is expected that the findings of this study can be used as a design reference to better fulfill the requirements of senior users.
