This master thesis investigates the phenomenon of Vietnamese individuals reverting to cash payments despite initially adopting mobile payment methods during and following the COVID-19 pandemic. As digital payment systems gained significant traction due to their convenience, security, and contactless nature, the adoption of mobile payments was expected to persist even after the pandemic. However, empirical evidence suggests that some users still revert to cash payments for various reasons.
This study was conducted to identify the factors that promote or hinder the transition of Vietnamese people’s payments in cash to non-cash payments, based on a total of 524 survey samples. The research focused on customers who have the experience and intent of using electronic payment in Vietnam.
The research will explore various potential drivers for this behavior change, including perceived alternative attractiveness, social influence, perceived security and privacy, performance expectation, effort expectation, and facilitating conditions. Additionally, the study will investigate any correlations between demographic factors including age, income level, educational attainment, and the likelihood of reverting to cash payments.
The findings of this thesis should be useful in understanding consumer behavior dynamics and the adoption of mobile payments in the Vietnamese context. The results will be relevant for policymakers, financial institutions, and mobile payment providers, enabling them to develop strategies and interventions to enhance the sustained usage of mobile payments and address the challenges that hinder their widespread adoption in the Vietnamese market.
