Propelled by the COVID-19 pandemic, digital transformation has become imperative for businesses worldwide. However, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often face significant barriers to digital adoption. This study investigates the factors influencing Taiwanese SMEs' inclination to embrace digital transformation and examines the mediating role of digital transformation agility.
Building upon the Network Readiness Index (NRI) model, this study posits that digital capability, organizational change, and market alertness constitute the core dimensions of digital readiness. A quantitative research design was employed, utilizing a survey of Taiwanese SMEs (N = 94). Structural equation modeling (SEM) with Smart PLS 4.0 was used to analyze the data.
The findings reveal that digital capability and organizational change exert a significant positive influence on digital transformation agility, which, in turn, significantly enhances SMEs' intention to adopt digital transformation. While market alertness did not directly impact the intention to adopt digital transformation, digital transformation agility fully mediated the relationship between digital capability, organizational change, and digital transformation intention.
These findings underscore the pivotal role of digital transformation agility in facilitating SMEs' digital adoption. By enhancing their digital capabilities and fostering organizational readiness, SMEs can cultivate a more agile and responsive stance towards digital transformation. This study contributes to the existing literature by providing empirical evidence on the mediating role of digital transformation agility in the context of Taiwanese SMEs. The findings offer valuable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers seeking to support SMEs in their digital journeys.
