This study focuses on how firms strategically navigate and proactively catalyze institutional environmental changes to achieve survival and competitive
advantages. The thesis adopts an Institutional-Based View, conducting an in-depth qualitative analysis of a single-case study of a traditional textile firm in Taiwan. It examines the motivations and conditions for firms to initiate institutional changes, the interactions between players within the changing institutional environment, and, finally, the evolutionary path of changes in the institutional environment from a macro perspective. The study deconstructs, discerns, and interprets the ways in which strategic positioning unfolds.
The thesis proposes three propositions: First, firms that are highly dependent on client demand within the existing institutional environment, if supported by top management and having a partner with key technology, have the motivation and capability to initiate changes in the institutional environment. Second, when the initiator of a new institution achieves significant performance through the adoption of new technology, it leads to the rapid diffusion of the technology and expands the composition of participants in the new institutional environment. Finally, the evolution of the institutional environment is driven by the collective consciousness of firms and the interactions between participants in the existed institutional environment. This study is expected to contribute to the theory and practice of the Institutional-Based View, institutional change, and the process of institutional evolution.
