When core competencies in library and information science are applied to non-traditional employment markets outside of libraries, they are referred to as "transferable skills." This study uses the neural topic model BERTopic to analyze a large number of online job advertisements during and after the COVID-19 pandemic through automated encoding, exploring the demand and potential of library and information science core competencies as transferable skills in non-traditional employment markets. The aims of this study provide references for educators, students, and professionals in the field of library and information science regarding curriculum design, career planning, and professional development.
The results indicate that the types of job market demands remained stable during and after the pandemic. In the job market, seven non-traditional employment markets highly related to library and information science were identified: (1) software applications and office processing, (2) medical care and certification, (3) teaching and tutoring, (4) marketing analysis and advertising, (5) software engineering, (6) legal affairs and patents, and (7) business systems. This reflects the cross-disciplinary application potential of library and information science, with the highest correlation found in the market demand for software applications and office processing; marketing analysis and advertising showed the most cross-disciplinary development opportunities. Regarding transferable skills, the study identified the demand and importance of these skills in various non-traditional employment markets. It found that information technology application abilities and some soft skills are generally valued across multiple non-traditional employment markets. Additionally, certain transferable skills were found to be highly relevant to market demands but were not frequently mentioned, indicating an unknown potential value for these skills.
Based on the research results, the study offers recommendations for the education and career development of the library and information science discipline. In terms of curriculum design, it is recommended to enhance the cultivation of high-demand skills such as information technology application, language proficiency, and digital marketing. For career planning, it is suggested to provide students with more information and guidance on non-traditional employment markets, helping them recognize the broad application potential of their acquired skills. Regarding professional development, it is advised to offer opportunities for in-service training, providing professionals with continuing education opportunities and exchange platforms to help them adapt to emerging technologies and changes in market demands, as well as to gain an in-depth understanding of the actual needs and potential value of library and information science in various fields.
