Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant (2015) narrates the experiences of four male characters in the aftermath of a genocide, including both perpetrators and victims. The novel is an allegory set in a quasi-historical post-Arthurian Britain, encouraging readers to interpret the narrative as if these warriors were modern soldiers in the context of contemporary war. Even though they proclaim the nobility of their vocations, these warriors, driven by the pursuit of power, participate in the collapse of chivalric values. This thesis aims to examine how Sir Gawain, Wistan, and Edwin, in their obedience to chivalry, fail to process their individual traumas. These three men, ranging from elderly to adolescent, all exhibit moral conflicts and the suppression of difficult emotions. The failures of Gawain and Wistan, microcosms of warrior culture, also symbolize the unresolved collective trauma of ethnic warfare between the Britons and Saxons. On the other hand, Axl, the only male character resolute in abandoning his warrior identity, finds potential healing through following his feminine traits. During Axl’s journey, he confronts his fear and rewrites his stories surrounding knightly bullying, the death of his son, and his tendency to control his wife Beatrice. The ending of the novel suggests that while individual sufferings may have the potential to recover, any resolution to the collective trauma remains precarious.
