As society evolves rapidly, creative problem-solving skills become increasingly crucial. Students needthese skills to adapt to future workplace and academic challenges. This studyexplores the potential mediating effects of creative self-efficacy and criticalthinking disposition on the relationship between design thinking mindset andcreative problem-solving ability, through the lens of the mental habits theory.
The study involved 464 studentsfrom five vocational high schools in southern Taiwan. Structural EquationModeling (SEM) was used to understand the direct effects of factors such as thedesign thinking mindset, creative self-efficacy, and critical thinkingdisposition on creative problem-solving ability. Additionally, the indirecteffects of the design thinking mindset through the mediation of creative self-efficacyand critical thinking disposition were assessed using AMOS's Bootstrappingmethod for mediation effect testing.
Most participants were male, andthe schools involved included Gangshan Agricultural and Industrial (11%),Tainan Industrial High School (15%), Chung Cheng Industrial High School (18%),Kaohsiung Industrial High School (28%), and Pingtung Industrial High School(28%), with a majority studying in electronics or mechanical-related fields. After SEM testing, most fit indices showed that the hypothesized model fitwell. Mediation effect coefficients indicated that the design thinking mindsethas a direct impact on creative problem-solving ability, and mediation analysisrevealed that the design thinking mindset indirectly affects creative problem-solvingability through creative self-efficacy. Similarly, the design thinking mindsetalso indirectly affects creative problem-solving ability through criticalthinking disposition. The results of this studyhighlight the importance of nurturing not only a design thinking mindset butalso training in creative self-efficacy and critical thinking disposition tocomprehensively enhance students' abilities to innovate and solve complexproblems. These findings provide empirical evidence on how mental habitsinfluence students' creative performances and will assist in future educationalpractice improvements.
