Transnational Corporations (TNCs) have become the symbol of economic globalization. Its
worldwide presence as well as the large-scale integration in all spheres of economic activities make
them the drivers of innovation and development. At the same time, their enormous influence and
global domination have resulted in the power transition from the states as the valid actors of
international affairs. Nowadays, to achieve their objectives, TNCs use various lobbying
instruments to influence government policies.
The role of this thesis is to go beyond the instrumental side of the issue and show how economic,
political and historical contexts can influence the nature of the relationship between the company
and the state. To address this question, the case of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company
(TSMC) is implied. This research evaluates to what extent the influence of TSMC is spread on the
actions of the state, namely, the Taiwan government, and, most importantly, in what manner this
influence is exerted.
The study uses the multidisciplinary approach, incorporating various tools from international
relations and business studies to analyze the relations between TSMC and the state. By conducting
an in-depth case study and utilizing primary and secondary sources, the research aims to provide
a comprehensive understanding of the extent to which TSMC''s presence shapes and is shaped by
the governmental dynamics of Taiwan. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to
scholarly discussions on the interconnection between transnational corporations and state actors,
particularly in the context of Taiwan.
