Policing is an essential profession worldwide, tasked with maintaining peace within societies. However, in present-day Thailand, police corruption has led to widespread suffering and disdain towards the profession, tarnishing the image of law enforcement. Despite efforts by the Royal Thai Police (RTP) to restore public trust and improve their image, these measures have often been perceived as superficial, failing to address the root issues. Despite extensive research conducted by Thai scholars to gauge public confidence in the police, none have delved into direct studies on police corruption due to organizational constraints, and police are prohibited from participating in research without prior approval from their superiors, ostensibly to uphold the organization''s positive image and prevent negative information from reaching the public. However, this restriction hinders transparency and accountability within law enforcement.
In this study, the author collected data from online open-ended questionnaires completed by 32 citizens and police respondents in two areas: Bangkok and Nakhon Sawan. The data were analyzed using the Open Coding method, and the results were organized into various tables. The findings revealed that police corruption primarily affected low-income individuals and those with significant family responsibilities. This situation made society unsafe, as police officers often ignored lawbreakers in exchange for profits. Consequently, people began to see police corruption as normal, perpetuating the cycle of corrupt behavior among police officers.
