自工業革命以來,產品設計主要以市場需求為核心,雖然這種市場導向的設計模式推動了工業的迅速發展,但也帶來了工業污染和環境破壞等社會問題。1972年,維克多·帕帕涅克在其著作《真實世界的設計》中強調,設計師應該關注社會和環境問題,推動設計領域向社會需求導向的方向發展。然而,儘管社會設計的重要性日益凸顯,但在產品設計領域,對於社會設計的委託、支持和實施依然缺乏明確的理論和方法。相較於傳統的市場導向設計,社會設計的研究和理論相對匱乏,這凸顯出設計界需要更多的研究和討論,以發展出基於社會需求的新型設計模式。
本研究旨在探索並建立基於社會需求的新型設計服務模式,填補現有模式的缺口。針對在產品設計領域的委託服務案、支持和實施策略及方法依然缺乏有效的導入典範參考。本文以促進竹纖維產業的可持續發展為目標,提出社會設計的導入與實證初探研究。文獻分析顯示竹纖維作為一種環保材料,在台灣具有資源豐富、生長迅速和可降解的優勢。然而,竹纖維產業在產品設計與開發過程中面臨諸多挑戰,這些挑戰與社會設計的理論與方法密切相關。
本研究採用個案研究法,以深度訪談法,深入探索社會設計在竹纖維產業中的應用。研究對象為竹纖維新創相關產業,透過訪談A公司董事長、各部門主管及社會設計公司總監,收集並分析資料。訪談內容基於IDEO執行長Tim Brown提出的設計思考法,發展出六大訪談構面:(一)需求識別與問題定義(二)協同創新與多方參與(三)設計思考與創意實踐(四)可持續性與社會影響(五)策略實施與資源整合(六)評估與反饋機制,以深入分析竹纖維公司的社會設計策略及其執行規劃。
研究結果顯示,A公司透過需求識別、協同創新、多方參與和設計思考與創意實踐等方式,提升了材料應用的創新性和市場競爭力,對塑膠產業轉型具有關鍵作用。並透過評估與反饋機制,讓消費者更深入地認識竹纖維的應用與優勢,進一步推動了竹纖維產業的可持續發展。然而,在實際操作中仍然存在一些挑戰,例如開發成本過高和政府政策支持不足可能會影響可持續發展戰略的實施。因此,本研究也突顯了社會設計理念對於推動產業轉型和可持續發展的重要性。
本研究建議竹纖維公司深化社會設計方法的應用,強化跨界合作機制,注重設計思考培養,推進環保材料技術創新和應用,並加強社會設計理論與實踐結合。未來,需要更多的研究和討論,以進一步發展社會設計理念,推動產業轉型,實現社會、環境和經濟的可持續發展。並鼓勵更多有志於推動社會設計的產官學能夠在此研究中啟發更多社會創新及實踐的行動,提升產業轉型的新模式,落實社會、環境和經濟的可持續發展新型態模式。
Since the Industrial Revolution, product design has primarily centered around market demand. While this market-oriented design model has driven rapid industrial development, it has also led to social issues such as industrial pollution and environmental degradation. In 1972, Victor Papanek emphasized in his work Design for the Real World that designers should focus on social and environmental issues, advocating for a shift in the design field towards addressing social needs. However, despite the increasing recognition of the importance of social design, there remains a lack of clear theories and methods for commissioning, supporting, and implementing social design in the field of product design. Compared to traditional market-oriented design, research and theory on social design are relatively lacking, highlighting the need for more research and discussion in the design community to develop new design models based on social needs.
This study aims to explore and establish a new design service model based on social needs to fill the gaps in existing models. There is still a lack of effective paradigmatic references for commissioned services, support, and implementation strategies and methods in the field of product design. This paper proposes an exploratory study on the introduction and empirical application of social design, with the goal of promoting sustainable development in the bamboo fiber industry. Literature analysis shows that bamboo fiber, as an environmentally friendly material, possesses advantages such as abundant resources, rapid growth, and biodegradability in Taiwan. However, the bamboo fiber industry faces numerous challenges in the product design and development process, challenges closely related to the theories and methods of social design.
This study adopts a case study approach using in-depth interviews to explore the application of social design in the bamboo fiber industry. The research focuses on startups related to bamboo fiber, collecting and analyzing data through interviews with the chairman of Company A, department heads, and the director of a social design company. Interview content is structured around the six dimensions of design thinking proposed by IDEO CEO Tim Brown: (1) Need Identification and Problem Definition, (2) Collaborative Innovation and Multi-stakeholder Participation, (3) Design Thinking and Creative Practice, (4) Sustainability and Social Impact, (5) Strategy Implementation and Resource Integration, and (6) Evaluation and Feedback Mechanism, to thoroughly analyze the social design strategies and execution plans of bamboo fiber companies.
The research findings indicate that Company A has enhanced the innovativeness and market competitiveness of material applications through methods such as need identification, collaborative innovation, multi-stakeholder participation, and design thinking and creative practice, playing a critical role in the transformation of the plastic industry. Through evaluation and feedback mechanisms, consumers gain deeper insights into the applications and advantages of bamboo fiber, further promoting sustainable development in the bamboo fiber industry. However, there are still challenges in practical operations, such as high development costs and insufficient government policy support, which may affect the implementation of sustainable development strategies. Therefore, this study also underscores the importance of the concept of social design in driving industrial transformation and sustainable development.
This study recommends that bamboo fiber companies deepen their application of social design methods, strengthen cross-sector collaboration mechanisms, focus on cultivating design thinking, promote innovation and application of environmental material technologies, and enhance the integration of social design theory and practice. Future research and discussion are needed to further develop social design concepts, promote industrial transformation, and achieve sustainable social, environmental, and economic development. It also encourages more stakeholders from academia, industry, and government who are committed to promoting social design to take action based on this research, fostering more social innovation and practical implementation, and realizing new models for sustainable development in social, environmental, and economic dimensions.
