Purpose:This study aimed to explore the relationship between achievement goal orientation, enjoyment of physical activity, and sports participation among upper grades students in elementary school. Method:The participants were upper grades students from a primary school in Taipei City, with an average age of 11.6 years. The research utilized the Achievement Goal Orientation Scale, Physical Activity Level Questionnaire for Elementary School Students, and the Enjoyment of Physical Activity Scale as research tools. Data were collected through questionnaires, yielding 255 valid responses. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS version 25.0, including Pearson correlation and regression analysis. Results:1. Pearson correlation analysis revealed a positive relationship between achievement goal orientation, enjoyment of physical activity, and sports participation among upper grades students in elementary school. 2. Regression analysis showed that both task and ego orientation of the students could predict sports participation and enjoyment of physical activity. Enjoyment of physical activity could also predict sports participation. 3. Further regression analysis identified enjoyment of physical activity as a mediator between achievement goal orientation and sports participation. Conclusion:Both task and ego orientation traits among upper grades students in elementary school effectively predicted sports participation and enjoyment of physical activity, showing a positive correlation. Task orientation had higher explanatory power, and students' enjoyment of physical activity could effectively predict the extent of sports participation. Enjoyment of physical activity was identified as a mediator between achievement goal orientation and sports participation among upper grades students. Future research could focus on longitudinal tracking, cross-cultural comparisons, and intervention studies to gain a comprehensive understanding of the long-term impact of achievement goal orientation on sports participation among upper grades students in elementary school.
