In recent years, with the growing demand for learning Mandarin Chinese, the number of international students coming to Taiwan to learn the language has steadily increased. However, these students often face numerous challenges due to linguistic and cultural differences. This study aims to design Mandarin Chinese drama teaching materials suitable for beginners, evaluating the materials based on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) 5C standards of foreign language education: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities, to determine if they effectively aid beginners in practicing and applying the target language.
This study employs a robust methodology, starting with a comprehensive literature review analysis to explore the benefits and drawbacks of using drama in language education. Building on this, four Mandarin Chinese play scripts are meticulously designed, each one aligning with the 5C standards. A content analysis method is then used to demonstrate how these scripts meet the criteria of the 5C standards. Finally, the study collects feedback from 22 Mandarin Chinese beginners using a well-structured questionnaire survey method to evaluate their views and anticipated learning outcomes.
The results indicate:
(1) The design of the four drama scripts aligns with the 5C standards, and learners hold a positive attitude towards using drama to learn Mandarin Chinese.
(2) Most participants believe that the drama scripts designed in this study enhance their learning motivation, language application skills, and cultural understanding.
(3) Developing a structural framework for creating Mandarin Chinese drama teaching materials for beginners and demonstration materials offers a novel and effective tool for teaching Mandarin Chinese.
