This study presents a meticulous examination of project control methodologies, particularly focusing on Earned Value Management (EVM), within the construction
industry. The research objectives are threefold: firstly, to establish a robust selection process for identifying reputable scholarly sources, to systematically categorize and analyze existing literature on project control and EVM, employing a comprehensive framework encompassing seven distinct classes; and thirdly, to identify emerging trends and potential areas for future research, thereby offering valuable insights for scholars in the field. Through a thorough selection process, this study curated articles from reputable journals, meticulously distinguishing them from popular business magazines. These articles were then organized and analyzed using a classification framework comprising key classes such as research problem, methodology, analysis, validation, application, limitations, and future research. The outcomes of this systematic classification process reveal significant correlations between project type, size, and the research themes of EVM studies across diverse construction projects. The predominant focus of existing research has centered on EVM in building and large-scale projects, underscoring their significance as primary subjects for EVM studies. However, this highlights a notable gap in research concerning projects of various types and sizes, warranting further investigation. Four pivotal research themes within EVM studies emerged: EVM models and methods, data management and integration, risk and quality management, and specialized applications. This comprehensive review underscores the extensive applicability of EVM in construction projects and offers actionable recommendations for future research directions. By providing a roadmap for scholars to navigate through essential EVM studies, this thesis serves as a valuable reference for advancing project control methodologies within the construction industry. Moreover, it contributes to filling a gap in the literature by evaluating management approaches in specific construction contexts, thereby enriching scholarly discourse in this domain. Understanding the current research landscape and its trajectory is crucial for steering future studies towards meaningful contributions in project control and EVM.
