In this study the behavior of rock (essentially, weak rock ) subject to foundation loading is studied through analytical and experimental approaches to provide fundamental understanding and guidelines for analysis and design in engineering aspect. In the analytical approach, a systematic survey is performed to evaluate and characterized the existing analytical methods and, as a result, to determine a proper analytical method. A representative material model describing the behavior of rock is to be developed. Based on the proposed material model, a series of parametric study is then performed to investigate the effect of related parameters. The results of this research include: extensive literature review, setup of numerical analysis as well as experimental study to observe the failure patterns and associated mechanisms, which will provide useful information for later analyses and experiments.
