In the era of knowledge economy, many enterprises utilizing the knowledge innovation for enhancement of their competitive advantages have resulted in the market environment changed rapidly. Further, people also must unceasingly study to meet their knowledge needs. However, the traditional learning cannot provide a flexible learning way for such a dynamic environment, and also is unable to achieve instant learning demands. The development of Internet and information technology has provided another learning conduit that offers learning anywhere, anytime, which is called e-learning. Therefore, many enterprises, schools, education and training units all start to get involved in e-learning by themselves or through software firms to employ e-learning information systems. This results in more concerns on the system function development, where the system architecture plays a critical role.
In the current literature about e-learning, very few focus on the system architecture, and they are also incomplete. Moreover, the e-learning environments are different from the traditional ones where instructors can instruct learners right away. Therefore, their development must be based on the learners to effectively assist their learning. Our research will be learners-oriented and use agents to construct a complete and flexible generic architecture for the e-learning environments. We hope to provide system developers as their references with full concerns on the construction of an e-learning environment.
