Puppetry is an ancient form of art that originated from religious rituals and traditional theater. Mankind had used puppetry to ask for goodwill and seek consolations since the primitive ages. Because through puppetry man can pay their respect to the gods, these ritual dramas of the primitive people are the archetypes of puppetry.
Puppetry had sprung from religion and theater, both which had always acted as media between human souls. It is not just play-acting, it comprises the infinite secrets and desires of man.
The strings that connect the puppet and the puppeteer symbolize the invisible link between the narrator hidden behind the scenes and the performer on stage. This style of performing has a deeper philosophical meaning.
Through the rituals in puppetry, people are able to seek for liberation. In puppet theater, the puppet is the embodiment of the self. In reality, clothes are like the simulacrum of the self. Fashion and dressing is like a theatrical play behind the theatrical self, we can also find some kind of redemption or consolidation. Fashion is the performing and interpreting of the self, it is the process of self-reconstructing.
I was inspired by the puppets in puppet theater. Therefore, in this creative research, I will try to apply inter-subjective relationship between man and puppet to trace the evolation of fashion. I will also use the imagery of puppets on wires as an analogy and extension of creation.
In addition, this paper will discuss the concept of the puppets, the personification of the puppets, and the objectification of man as a conversion of fashion designing to carry out the creative experiment.
This paper will be divided into three sections: 1. An overall view of the field and theoretical analysis; 2. Creative experiment; 3. Creation and exhibition.
1. An overall view of the field and theoretical analysis. I will use past research and theories of puppetry and fashion as the basis for my own productions.
2. The procedures of the creative experiment and transition. Using the elements in puppet theater such as the connecting strings, manipulation relations, puppet, subjectivity/objectivity, etc. to develop a new vocabulary for the creative productions.
3. Creation and exhibition. The combining of fashion design, stage design to express the essence of the creator’s designs.
