Purpose: To explore the relationship between breastfeeding and quality of life (QOL) during the first month postpartum.
Methods: This data was gathered from one cohort study in southern Taiwan from August 2010 to June 2011. All participants’ data were delinked for basic demographic information. The included criteria were full-term live births, singleton and completed questionnaires, the final total of 281 postpartum women were recruited. This study was supported by grants NSC 99-2314-B-309-005-MY3 from the National Science Council, Taiwan.
Results and Discussions: Most of the subjects were 25-35 years old, with university or higher education and a job. Over 50% women were multiparous and natural spontaneous delivery. The prevalence of breastfeeding within one month after their delivered was 92.9%. Overall the score of QOL were 65.5. The score of the physical function (83.8) was better, but the vitality (51.8) was worse than other domains. The women with breastfeeding had better score in total scores of QOL, general health, role limitations due to emotional problem, and general mental health than those without breastfeeding(P<0.05).
Conclusions: There was no significant negative effect between breastfeeding and quality of life of women during the postpartum period. The results of this study could be references for breastfeeding and related researches in future.
