在此篇論文中,我們提出了一種新型的極化轉換波導結構。首先將肋狀波導的波導芯設計成適當的矩形結構,然後在這矩形的波導芯上方覆蓋一層負載。在適當的負載厚度、寬度及負載折射率條件下,只需要單一區段的非對稱負載就可以完成極化轉換元件。
從模擬的結果發現,由於我們設計的極化轉換區段的光場結構與未加覆蓋層的輸入/輸出波導的結構相互匹配,光場依然侷限在導光層的中心附近,不需要在結構上做額外的錯位(offset)設計來降低損耗,可以減少製程的步驟。光場在波導中的轉換效率可以達到95~99%,而能量的過渡損耗只有0.03~0.21%。也不需要為了提高不同結構之間的光場模態的偶合在輸入/輸出波導與極化轉換區段之間加上漸變結構。所以在波長λ=1550nm的情況下,我們極化轉換的元件長度可以控制在10μm以下。達到製程容易、低損耗、小型化的極化轉換波導元件。
We proposed and designed a new polarization conversion waveguide structure. The core of the waveguide was designed as a specific rectangular configuration. To complete the polarization conversion requires only a single asymmetrical loading on the core. The optical field is still confined to the vicinity of the core center which is very match the optical field of the input/output waveguides. The transition loss of the polarization rotator is as low as 0.03 ~ 0.21 dB/facet without offset or tapper mode rotator. It is feasible to make an ultracompact polarization rotator with length less than 10 μm at a wavelength of 1550 nm when we design an appropriate aspect ratio of the core.
