This thesis aims to emphasize desires among the sponsors, painters and models in The Lady and the Unicorn and Girl with a Pearl Earring. Both novels are based on the pictures which are the projections of male artists and their desires. To satisfy desires, female models in two novels, express feminine sexualities and displays the seduction of power.
The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the writing ambition, and explains the importance of desires. Chapter two focuses on the desires of virgin values and the seduction in The Lady and the Unicorn. The Christian symbol and the masculine figures of unicorn are related to the projection of artist’s desire. The main idea in chapter three is the authority of desires in Girl with a Pearl Earring. Art, love and marriage are determined by power, so female characters: Griet and Catharina need the authority to satisfy their desires. Both in chapter two and chapter three examine discussed about how desires motivate art works. Chapter four shows how desires are displayed in art works, including the artists’ projection and transformation. Desires also lead to the process: art commodities of desires which are valued and exchangeable. The final chapter concludes main idea of the thesis. The contribution and the value of the thesis are mentioned in chapter five as well.
