Objectives: According to survey by the Child Welfare League Foundation in Taiwan on 2021, approximately 32.4% of high school students reported having childhood trauma experiences. Among these students, many exhibited severe emotional distress, suicidal ideation or neurodevelopmental disorders. These findings suggests that childhood trauma is an important issue should be addressed in Taiwan. Therefore, the present study focus on two questions: How childhood trauma experiences influence the post-traumatic growth in adults? The second is to explore the roles of self-compassion and self-disclosure. Methods: A convenience sampling and questionnaire survey was conducted in this study, recruiting 156 adults are between ages of 18 to 44 years who had childhood trauma experiences. The measurement tools included the "Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (ACE-Q)," " Self-Compassion Scale-Short Form (SCS-SF)," " Distress Disclosure Index," and the " Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI)." Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and regression analysis were conducted to verify the mediating effect of self-compassion and the moderating effect of self-disclosure. Results: (1) There is a significant negative correlation between childhood trauma experiences and self-compassion. (2) There is a significant positive correlation between self-compassion and post-traumatic growth. (3) Self-compassion fully mediates the relationship between childhood trauma experiences and post-traumatic growth. (4) Self-disclosure significantly moderates the relationship between childhood trauma experiences and post-traumatic growth. Conclusion: This study confirms the crucial roles of self-compassion and self-disclosure in the relationship between childhood trauma experiences and post-traumatic growth. Individuals with higher levels of self-compassion are more likely to achieve positive growth after childhood trauma experiences. Additionally, active self-disclosure behaviors help mitigate the negative impacts of trauma and enhance post-traumatic growth. The findings emphasize the importance of fostering self-compassion and encouraging self-disclosure in psychological therapy and trauma treatment, providing valuable insights for clinical practice in Taiwan.
