The general public’s evaluation of streetscape or even city image is usually based on building facade, so building facade is one of the important elements that affect urban landscape. In streetscape or urban landscape, residential building is the most common architectural form that accounts for the largest proportion. In recent years, among the new urban development cases, residential projects in the 7th land consideration district in Taichung City are of the largest scale, and Type I residential area (hereafter referred to as “Residential One”) is the major type of land plan in the district. Due to the constraint of regulations, the major architectural forms are “single house” and “duplex house” with a shrunk front yard. Inclined roof is the common type of roof, and most of the houses are 3-5 stories high. These features become the characteristic facade and images of buildings in the 7th land consideration district in Taichung City. For future planning of consideration districts, they are important references.
As a result, this study performed an evaluation of the facade of “Residential One” buildings in the 7th land consideration district in Taichung City, and field survey was the major research method adopted to construct the fundamental data. Through a literature review and analysis, this study further used the semantic differential method to perform image evaluations. The statistic software SPSS was applied to understand the structure of “evaluations”. Through the field survey, a total of 173 residential building facade cases were obtained and further classified. Finally, 14 representative cases were selected as research subjects. The main research results are induced as follows:
1. Using the semantic differential method to evaluate building facade could effectively quantify and objectively present human perceptions. Through the collection of adjectives for building facade, the adjectives were categorized into 7 types: (1) style of the building, (2) color of the building, (3) volume of the building, (4) division style of the building, (5) perceived value of the building, (6) perceived quality of building materials, and (7) psychological perception. 2. Analysis of the difference in the image evaluation of the facade of various “Residential One” buildings: In terms of the mean and tendency in the evaluation of 14 “Residential One” buildings, “western classic A-1” and “eclectic purlin beam B-1” received most positive evaluations. On the contrary, “western classic A-1” received most negative evaluations. “Eclectic circular arch A-1 and A-2” did not receive any image evaluation. 3. The overall image evaluation of buildings in the 7th land consideration district in Taichung City: (a) style feature: urban; (b) volume feature: tall and firm; (c) division style feature: ordered; (d) perceived value feature: innovative; (e) feature of perceived quality of materials: refined. 4. The effects of the differences in subjects’ attributes on their image evaluation of “Residential One” building facade: Differences in subjects’ attributes, including the architecture-related background, gender, and age, would cause differences in their perceptions in the evaluation of building facade. However, most of the image differences were characterized with similar image perceptions at different intensities.
