This research investigates the moderation of the mood on unconscious, spontaneous behavioral mimicry among Taiwanese Chinese. In Experiment 1, whether a model played a pen or not was manipulated, and the closeness of the relationship between participants and a model, and participants’ mood state were measured. The model was one of the two participants. The results showed the chameleon effect; participants mimicked the model’s pen-playing behaviors. In Experiment 2, participants’ positive, neutral, or negative mood state was manipulated. Each participant viewed a film depicting a female model doing some office works. The model would either occasionally shake her foot, stroke her hair, cover her mouth and yawn, or not exhibit any of the three behaviors. The results revealed the moderation effect of mood on the chameleon effect. Participants in a negative mood were less likely to mimic the model’s behaviors. They were slower to mimic and mimicked less of the model’s behaviors than those in the positive and neutral mood. No difference was found in behavioral mimicry between those in the positive and neutral mood. These findings extend van Baaren, Fockenberg, Holland, Janssen and van Knippenberg (2006), and demonstrate that positive mood does not facilitate behavioral mimicry, whereas negative mood inhibits behavioral mimicry. The present research not only replicates previous Western research but also clarifies the direction of the moderation of the mood on behavioral mimicry.
