The purpose of the research is to develop a virtual reality (VR) based simulation training system. The system provides a safety environment for the trainee to improve his ability of operation and assists the trainer a new technique for training. The VR- based crane simulation system is divided into two parts: a mobile crane and a overhead crane. Both parts include the manuals of training and testing, the layout of the virtual environment, the applications of VR devices, the design of hydraulic and locomotion platforms, the development of the monitoring system, the editorship of the multimedia, and the integration of the global system. The dissertation is focus on the process and result of virtual reality applications and system integration. dVISE software is used to create the virtual environment. In order to enhance visualization, the scenery is rendered on a SGI/Octane workstation. A large screened 3D projector or a head-mounted display is utilized to illustrate stereogragh. Finally, these subsystems are incorporated with the hydraulic or locomotion platform and the monitoring system.
