《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》的出版，象徵著英國兒童文學黃金時代的來臨。140年後在這機械大量複製的時代，圖像傳達的力量及影響力，逐漸影響著社會各個層面；儘管從任何角度探討，圖像語言與圖文詮釋儼然成了現代熱門議題，近代圖畫書的興起，更推波助瀾了圖像語言文法系統的建立。《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》的成就在於開創了，文字作者與插圖者之間微妙的合作關係，以及那特殊的圖文交互作用。作者卡洛爾以文字敘述一位維多利亞時代的小女孩在仙境旅途中，學習成長及尋找自我認同的過程；並通過維多利亞時期兒童教育的戲仿，對當代社會政治文化做了諷刺的影射與反省。插畫家泰尼爾則是掌握了維多利亞時代的社會政治文化背景脈絡，且透過精準的插畫勾勒出一幕幕仙境中的人事物，創造出故事中的真實夢境。
卡洛爾與泰尼爾的合作關係，促使圖文交互作用的成功，讓《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》成就圖文詮釋文本的典範。版權的解禁促使插畫家試圖挑戰原始版本，二次世界大戰後的愛麗絲，由於時代的轉變出現了更多元的風貌，例如：1969年美國達利(Dali)所繪的超現實主義愛麗絲，1967年英國拉爾夫•史黛曼(Rlph Steadman) 以強烈的黑色線條描繪瘋狂的愛麗絲。通過兒童文學、插圖、心理學、文本、語言等構面來探討這本著作不計其數，卻鮮少以圖像詮釋的角度來理解文本。本研究試圖通過圖像詮釋的角度分析圖文背後社會深層的意涵，進而讓圖像語言傳達上得以更加明確。本研究結果如下：
一、卡洛爾的故事原型與泰尼爾的圖像原型受到維多利亞社會政治背景及個人生活週遭環境影響。
二、《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》中圖文的關係有兩種形式，1.圖像與文字輪流敘事2.文字指示圖像敘事。
三、在首版圖像詮釋者的成就下，後世插畫家均難以避免泰尼爾在造型、構圖、取景及佩件採用上的影響；時代的不同亦造就後世插畫家對媒材的使用及風格表現上日新月異。
四、泰尼爾的圖像詮釋風格深受當時維多利亞社會對中世紀的膜拜所影響。

The publication of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland implies the beginning of the golden age of children’s literature in Britain. 140 years later, in the era of mass production, the power and influence of graphic/image expressions gradually penetrated every corner of today’s society. It is commonly agreed that the study of image language and illustration interpretation has become a well-discussed topic. With the rise of popularity of comic and graphic books in recent time, accelerated the establishment of a standardised system for image language. The success of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has initiated the delicate working relationship between the authors and illustrators, as well as the unique interaction between texts and illustrations. The author, Carroll narrated the adventures of a little Victorian girl in a wonderland, the process of learning, growing up and in search of self-recognition. From this education material for children, she expressed her cynical and critical views of the social-political culture in Victoria Era. The illustrator, Tenniel, with his appreciation of the social-political in Victoria England, he injected lives to the characters and scenes in the Wonderland, created a series of realistic pictures for the imagined world in the story.

The co-operation between Carroll and Tenniel, successfully facilitated the interaction between writings and illustrations, underpinned the paragon status of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in text-illustration expression. The expiry of copyright enabled illustrators to challenge to the original version, flourished the multi-variant images of Alice after WWII. For example, an American artist, Dali presented Alice in a super-realism style and, a British cartoonist, Ralph Steadman presented Alice in an equally unconventional way with strong black strokes and lines. Numerous researches on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland have be done, from the perspective of children’s literature, illustrations, psychology, scripts and languages. The researches that focus on image interpretation are limited.

The main objective of this research is to analyse the embedded meaning of the society portrayed by texts and illustrations from the perspective of image interpretations, and hence enable the expression of clear and precise image language. The results of this research can be summarised as below.
1. The original story by Carroll and illustrations by Tenniel were outlined from the lifestyle in Victorian England.
2. The text-illustrations relationship of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland can be categorised in two ways, i.e. a) narrations with illustrations and texts in sequential/rotational manner, b) narrations with text-guided illustrations.
3. As a result of the exceptional achievement of the first edition in image interpretations , Tenniel’s style remains highly influential to illustrators in later ages in term of image designs, compositions, view angles, costumes. Due to changes of social values and trends in different eras, illustrators attempt new materials and styles in the creation of Alice’s images.
4. The style of Tenniel’s illustrations were deeply influenced by the admiration of European Middle Ages that commonly found in Victorian England.
