This essay is mainly analyses Murakami Ryu’s early phase works “Almost Transparent Blue” and “War begins at the other side of the sea”. By analyzing his tests, I tried to find out about Murakami Ryu’s creative thinking and the change from his early phase work. In the first chapter, I have outlined the MacArthur’s occupation policy. The early period of occupation in Japan, and then presented people’s feelings who lived near by The American’s military base. I found the American’s military base really had a huge power to affect people’s lives, and some people didn’t realize that had been affected by the American’s culture and life style. In the second chapter, I analyzed the text “Almost Transparent Blue” to try to find out what Murakami Ryu wanted to express by describing the hippy’s life. I also focused on Murakami’s special idiosyncrasy about metaphors. I tried to figure out the meanings of the metaphor “bug”, “black bird”, and “doll”. The presentation of these three metaphors effects the text and these three metaphors have a kind of correlation. This is one of the points that I want to define. In the third chapter, I analyzed the text “War begins at the other side of the sea”. I found this text hasn’t a clear borderline between the stories also the relationship between the hero and heroine isn’t clearly defined. There are four stories composed in the text, and the heroine “Finney” connects all stories by seeing the hero’s eyes and describing what she look. This made up the text so complicated and also caused problems about how to identify “me” and “other”.
