The subject of this thesis is compliation of national codes andcharacteristics of national ritual from Han dynasty to T''ang dynasty. Becausenational ritual codes were lawful, they were particular in the history ofChinese ritual.Whenever people were against the national ritual codes, theywould be punished by law. The explication of "li" was wholly within Chinese emperors'' rights.National ritual codes were the symbol of nation and imperialpower. The earliest national ritual code available in China is "Ta-T''angK''ai-yuan li" .So the focal point of this thesis focus on "Ta-T''ang K''ai-yuanli". This thesis contains six charpters: Charpter 1: Introduction Charpter 2: The Meanings of "Li" and the Construction of Ritual Codes Charpter 3: The Compilation of Ritual Codes Charpter 4: The Contents of "Ta-T''ang K''ai-yuan li" Charpter 5: The Impact of "Ta-T''ang K''ai-yuan li" Charpter 6: Conclusions
