The purpose of this study was to collect and analyze school anthems in Yun-lin County. The school anthems are a part of our heritage that can be passed on from generation to generation. Hopefully, through this study, a collection of school anthems could provide valuable materials that could help further understanding of the history and culture of Yun-lin Country. This study was conducted through data collection (questionnaires, interviews done in written forms), literature review, and investigation (to search for lost school anthems). Collected data were organized, verified, classified, and analyzed.
There are in total 213 schools from elementary schools to university, both public and private, in Yun-lin County. Among these schools, only 106 schools had school anthems which were included for analysis in this study. The analysis of school anthems covered the following aspects: time of creation, occasions when school anthems were sung, melodies, lyrics, backgrounds of the composers, as well as the differences and similarities of school anthems. Characteristics regarding melodies were also analyzed, including tempo, upbeat or downbeat, tonsystem (tonality, chromatic semitone), compass, duration (measure number, beat number), note, rests and tempo, musical form, harmonic progression of accompaniment, and style. Characteristics regarding lyrics were analyzed as well, including the language (classical Chinese or modern Chinese), the use of rhyming words, sentence patterns (neat one or long and short verse), length (number of words used), refrain, number of paragraphs, meanings of lyrics, and so on.
