詞彙是兒童語言能力的基礎,詞彙能力的發展深切影響兒童日後語言能力的表現。臨床上,語言治療師多以評估兒童的詞彙廣度知識,來了解語言發展遲緩兒童的詞彙能力。但是否可以完整呈現兒童的詞彙能力缺失,仍待探討。本研究欲進一步探討兒童的詞彙深度知識表現,以及詞彙廣度知識和深度知識間的關聯性,以期完整瞭解語言遲緩兒童的詞彙能力缺陷。並且,探討年齡對語言遲緩兒童的詞彙能力的影響。
本研究的實驗組為36位4-7歲的語言發展遲緩兒童,控制組則為36位4-7歲的正常組兒童。以兒童年齡、性別以及父母的教育程度進行配對。運用五項自訂詞彙能力測驗來進行施測,包括以「自發性語料分析」、「詞彙命名」來評估兒童的詞彙廣度知識,以及以「詞彙指認」、「詞彙描述」、「詞彙繪圖」評估兒童的詞彙深度知識。
結果顯示,語言遲緩組兒童在各項詞彙廣度知識和詞彙深度知識的測驗結果均明顯低於正常組。而且其詞彙廣度知識和詞彙深度知識的表現顯著相關。此外,研究結果也顯示遲緩組兒童的各項詞彙能力會隨年齡增長而提升。但是整體而言,遲緩組的詞彙能力和正常組仍維持一定程度的差異,並沒有隨著年齡增長而顯著改善。
綜合本研究結果可知,語言遲緩兒童的詞彙能力缺失是全面性的,除了出現在廣度知識,其深度知識亦受限。因此,單項評估期兒童廣度或深度知識可能無法完整呈現其詞彙能力缺失。可做為日後臨床評估、治療語言遲緩兒童的參照。
Vocabulary is the fundamental element in children’s language acquisition. Hence, vocabulary ability might have influence on the overall development of language. Clinically, the speech and language pathologists frequently assess the breath of vocabulary performance on children with developmental language disabilities. However, whether or not the evaluation of the breath of vocabulary knowledge is sufficient enough to present the general vocabulary deficit in children requires more investigations. In order to explore such issue in a broader sense, this study was aimed to examine children’s performance on the depth of vocabulary knowledge, and the relationship between the breath and the depth of vocabulary knowledge. The effect of age on vocabulary capacity in children with developmental disabilities was included in this study as additional factor, as well.
36 children (age 4 to 7) with language delay were included in the experimental group, along with 36 children with intact language ability (matched with age, gender, and parental education background) served as control in this study. Five self-developed vocabulary tests were employed: “language sample collecting”, “picture naming” were to assess the breath of vocabulary knowledge, and “picture choosing”, “describing” and “drawing” were to evaluate the depth of vocabulary knowledge.
The results of the study demonstrated that the performance of the experimental group in most of test items was significantly poorer than the control group. Moreover, the performance between the breath and the depth of vocabulary knowledge was significantly related. In addition, improvement with age in the majority of the vocabulary tests was observed in children in delay group. However, even with such improvement in vocabulary ability in delay group, significant developmental lag was still presented while compared to normal developed group in all test items.
In conclusion the vocabulary deficit in children with language delay is extensive, meaning both depth and breath of vocabulary knowledge was affected. That is, the evaluation of either the breath or the depth of vocabulary knowledge along might be unable to present the overall vocabulary capacity in children with language delay. Hence, the results of the present study might be able to serve as references for clinical evaluation and treatment.
