ABSTRACT
The aim of this study is to investigate why Chinese often use kinship terms as address forms for non-kins, and how they are used in Taiwan. This study is carried out on 419 Chinese students in Taipei. They are divided into four age groups--10-11, 12-15, 16-18 and 20-30. The data are collected by questionnaires. The questionnaire is designed for different sexes and ages to choose which address forms they would use in different situations. The content of the questionnaire is divided into two domains: home and public domains. These two domains include twelve situations. The subjects are asked to select an appropriate selection they can think of to address their listeners in each situation. The results show that the differences are significant. It means different sexes and ages will affect the use of address forms. Generally speaking, in the home domain, most subjects use kinship terms to the elders. In the public domain, kinship terms are not the dominant address forms for the elder strangers. Most young subjects still use kinship terms to call elder strangers. However, our subjects in age groupⅡ(about ages 12-15) gradually use social titles to replace kinship terms. Hence, we can see that the use of kinship terms will decrease with one''s age increase. Besides, females use more intimate kinship terms than males do. At last, this study also discusses the change of the use of kinship terms for non-kins. The results reflect the changing society.
