The present study examined the effect of emotional words on attention and memory by using the emotional Stroop task, a recognition task and a free recall task. In Experiment 1, the emotional and nonemotional words were presented in both Chinese and English conditions. The results did not show a clear benefit of emotional words on capture attention as color naming times for emotional words were not different from neutral words. No memory enhancement was found for emotional words compared with neutral words. Experiment 2 replicated Experiment 1 by using Chinese words only and added a recall task. Although the effect of emotional words was not found for attention, emotional words were found to recall better than nonemotional words. The same pattern of results found in Experiment 2 was also found in Experiment 3, except the words presented in Experiment 3 were English words. No clear emotional Stroop effect was found in the present study, however, memory enhancement was found for emotional words in the recall condition. The present findings suggested that the early stage of encoding with the involvement of attention does not contribute totally to the memory enhancement for the emotional words. The effect of emotion on memory and attention is similar in both native and second languages.
