費弗爾(Lucien Febvre, 1878-1956)並非是史學理論家，而是一位歷史研究的實踐者；他的一生都在積極推廣其史學理念，並將之落實於歷史研究中。雖然，費弗爾與布洛克 (Marc Bloch, 1886-1944) 同為法國著名歷史學刊物《經濟社會史年鑑》(Annales d’Histoire Économique et Sociale，以下簡稱《年鑑》) 的創辦人。而費弗爾的學生，著名史家布勞岱爾 (Fernand Braudel, 1902-1985) 宣稱，費弗爾是自米歇列 (Jules Michelet, 1798-1874) 以來，法國唯一偉大的歷史學家。 但是，對於法國以外的歷史學界而言，費弗爾及其歷史著作仍是陌生的，至少與布洛克及布勞岱爾比較起來，情況是如此。

綜觀費弗爾的一生，他就讀大學期間接受的是「方法學派」 (école méthodique) 嚴格的歷史研究訓練。然而，他並非一位傳統史家，他與布洛克共同創立《年鑑》期刊，從而發起一場史學革新運動。他們以《年鑑》作為批判傳統史學、宣揚新史學理念的中心。他們通過此期刊，聚集一批具有改革精神的歷史學家、心理學家、地理學家、社會學家和經濟學家，以進行跨學科交流。他們運用跨學科的概念與方法，進而擴大歷史研究的領域與史料的範圍。他們倡導整體歷史的研究，認為歷史學家的研究對象是整個人類社會，涉及人類生活的各個層面，如經濟、社會、地理與政治、宗教、情感等，而史家應對社會的各種結構進行分析。

在一九三三年，費弗爾成為法蘭西學院 (Collège de France) 的教授，且被任命為編撰《法蘭西百科全書》 (Encyclopédie Française) 的委員會主席。 二次世界大戰後，費弗爾成為「年鑑運動」 的領袖，並被選為高等研究實踐學院 (École Pratique des Hautes Études，簡稱E. D. H. E.) 院士與法國駐聯合國教科文組織 (UNESCO) 的代表；他同時還參與《人類的科學與文化史》 (Scientific and Cultural History of Mankind) 一書的編撰。在一九四七年，他提請政府批准設立了高等研究實踐學院第六部─經濟和社會科學部，並親自擔任該部部長和其下屬的歷史研究中心主任。 費弗爾即以這些機構作為推廣其歷史思想的基礎。費弗爾過世後，他的位置由其學生布勞岱爾接任。由於費弗爾和布洛克的努力，年鑑運動所帶來的新觀念與新方法成為二次世界大戰之後最重要的歷史研究趨勢之一，對歐美各國的史學發展具有深遠的影響力。

就費弗爾實際的歷史研究而言，他的不少著作對於後來的史家與研究領域具有啟發性的貢獻。費弗爾主張歷史學與地理學必須合作。他在《歷史學的地理導論》(A Geographical Introduction to History) 一書中，試圖在歷史和地理之間架一座橋樑，以探討人類發展與地理環境的關係。他著有《萊茵河─歷史、神話和現實》(Le Rhin：Histoire, Mythes et Realites) 一書。此書可說是費弗爾對歷史地理思想的實踐之作。而《歷史學的地理導論》也在相當程度上啟發了布勞岱爾。 費弗爾更極力主張歷史學與心理學合作，以研究人類生活，探究特定時代人們的心理狀態。在《馬丁‧路德─一場命運》(Martin Luther：A Destiny) 一書中，費弗爾探討十六世紀德國社會的集體心理與生活狀態。在《十六世紀不信神問題─拉伯雷的宗教》一書中，費弗爾試圖說明一定時空範圍內人們的「心態工具」 (mental tools)，亦即是長期左右著人們的生活方式、思想方式和信仰方式的一系列觀念。此書揭示了社會的思想文化氛圍和普通民眾的心態。由於這些著作，費弗爾被視為後來發展成熟的心態史 (history of mentality) 的先驅。法國史家孟圖 (Robert Mandrou, 1921-1984) 與杜比 (Georges Duby, 1916-1996) 的心態史研究即是受到費弗爾的影響。

綜上所述，費弗爾對西方當代史學的貢獻，並不僅是創辦《年鑑》期刊而已。費弗爾生活的時代，歷史學界的主流是方法學派，他們以研究政治史及事件為主。費弗爾卻畢生不遺餘力地倡導上述的史學理念，並以語言學、社會學、心理學與人類學的概念及方法，企圖重現法國十六世紀的精神世界。目前台灣歷史學界已先後有學者研究法國年鑑史學家布洛克與布勞岱爾，以及提倡新史學的勒高夫 (Jacques Le Goff, 1924- )；但是尚未有人對費弗爾做過研究。主要是由於語言上的困難，他的眾多著作中只有少數幾本被譯成英文，二部被譯成中文。然而，費弗爾對年鑑史學的貢獻與對歷史學的重要性，絕不亞於上述幾位歷史學家。因此，筆者期望能夠藉由研究費弗爾的主要歷史著作，進一步了解他的歷史思想。

本篇論文的研究課題主要是探討費弗爾對「何謂歷史」這一問題的思索與回答。而本文所要處理的課題涉及三個面向。首先，由於費弗爾所批判的對象是「方法學派」，因此方法學派如何看待歷史學將成為本文的論述重點。圍繞著這一主題，本文將討論十九世紀末法國歷史研究的狀況及其產生的問題。其次，費弗爾批判方法學派忽視「何謂歷史」的問題，那麼費弗爾又是如何面對並思索這個問題。他對這個問題的相關論述中，所涉及的史家與史實的關係為何。費弗爾批判方法學派歷史研究的缺陷，那麼費弗爾提出了何種解決方案。最後，費弗爾對「何謂歷史」的回答與闡述，是否落實在他的歷史研究中，是否呈現在他對拉伯雷、馬丁‧路德 (Martin Luther, 1483-1546) 與萊茵河 (Le Rhin) 的研究中。筆者將以這三大課題為主軸，檢視費弗爾的歷史思想，探究費弗爾的史學理念與實踐。

在章節安排上，除了導論與結論之外，本文將分成四個部分。在本文第一章中，筆者將考察十九世紀中後期至年鑑運動前法國歷史學的氛圍，論述實證主義史學與方法學派的思想脈絡，以及兩者之間觀念的差異。接著，筆者將分析當時歷史研究的局限與社會科學的興起，並且探討《年鑑》的創刊及其所欲宣傳的研究宗旨。在第二章中，筆者則試圖闡述費弗爾所主張的史學革新與史學理念，剖析費弗爾對「何謂歷史？」的相關論述，如何構成他的史學理念。在這一討論脈絡中，筆者將考察費弗爾關於史料、史實與史家關係的看法，以及他所採取的問題導向研究方法與他所主張的跨學科研究。在第三章中，筆者將從費弗爾的具體研究著作中，探討他如何落實史學理念，並分析他如何運用社會科學的概念與方法。最後，在第四章中，筆者將討論費弗爾的史學遺產及其評價，論述費弗爾的史學理念對後進學者的啟發，以及費弗爾的研究成果對法國歷史學界的貢獻。在這一討論過程中，筆者將從反思的角度觀察費弗爾的歷史思想與當代歷史學家對費弗爾的批判，以進一步評價費弗爾的歷史地位。
