曹雪芹在《紅樓夢》中，設置了真實與虛幻並存的雙面性。風月寶鑑之設計非但反映《紅樓夢》的二元結構，風月寶鑑允其操作者既可誤導、又或啟發的觀看方式，是其融通鏡子與小說身分的共通點。換句話說，風月寶鑑既代表小說中鏡子，又可直接代表小說的雙重性身分，使其在文本中成為《紅樓夢》的縮影或暗喻。其誤導性與啟發性共存的鏡子特徵，可擴大至文本中其他鏡子意像，包括：建築、玉與甄賈寶玉，以及小說的敘事結構。
本文意欲從「鏡子意像」此一新面向，探討《紅樓夢》長久以來的虛實議題。論文分為二部分：第一部份，分析文本內的鏡子意像，如：風月寶鑑、建築、玉與甄賈寶玉之關係，並探討小說表現在寶玉生命，及其週遭人類世界的虛實。第二部分，視小說為鏡子意像，藉由其鏡子結構，諸如：循環式的情節、二元主線、及多重題名，探討曹雪芹如何企圖以幻覺般的結構，誤導、愉悅、啟發讀者。

Cao Xueqin posits two sides—reality and illusion—to his The Dream of the Red Chamber. The novel’s binary structure is presented in the design of Fengyue Baojian (Precious Mirror/Warning of Sensual Life), which operates to delude and enlighten its viewers both as a mirror and the novel itself. In other words, these two identities of Fengyue Baojian allow it to be an epitome or a metaphor of the textual body of The Dream of the Red Chamber. Fengyue Baojian’s deluding and enlightening features can be extended to other
mirror images in the novel, including architecture, the jade and two Baoyu’s, and the narrative structure.
This thesis is a study focusing on the mirror images in an attempt to cast a new light on the long-lasting issue of reality and illusion in The Dream of the Red Chamber. It is
divided into two parts. The first part analyzes mirror images in the novel, such as Fengyue Baojian, architecture, and the jade and two Baoyu’s binary relationships. It discusses reality and illusion in Jia Baoyu and the human world around him. The second part analyzes the mirror image as the novel itself. Through the novel’s mirror-like structure, its reflexive,cyclic plot, binary relations and multiple titles, this part discusses how Cao seeks to delude, delight, and enlighten his readers through the phantasmagoric structure of the novel.
