The main purpose of this research is to study the forms and functions of "Op enwork Windows" in the Lin''''s Family House. The method of site investigation w as used to collect data and information through photographing and measurement. Further research was then conducted by categorization, consolidation, and co mparison analysis. The thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter One is " Introduction" which presents the motive, purpose, scope, content, methods, and process of this research. Chapter Two is "Chinese garden Openwork Windows" wh ich is a retrospect to the forms and functions of the Chinese garden Openwork Windows. Chapter Three is "The Background and Garden Layouts Design of Lin''''s Family House" which illustrates the development history and layout design of L in''''s Family House. Chapter Four is "The investigation of Lin''''s Fmily House''''s Openwork Windows" where further study and analysis were conducted. Chapter Fi ve is "Lin''''s Family House Openwork Windows''''s Comparison and Analysis" which co mpares the differences of Openwork Windows based on the information in the pre vious chapters. Chapter Six is "Conclusion" which summarizes the Lin''''s Family House Openwork Windows. Further application of "Openwork Windows" and the po ssible directions are also proposed for future study. The major research resu lts are summarized as follows: There are strong dependent relationships betwe en the forms and the functions of the Lin''''s Family House''''s Openwork Windows. The ''''Openwork Windows'''' forms include: height, open size, style, view, situatio n, materials, color, topic, meanings and symbol. The Openwork Windows''''s funct ions include: in-between space, visual guidance, artistry, opening degrees, em pty and solid forms, the buildings'''' styles and functions. Both forms and func tions have mutual influence on each other in terms of the depth. In addition both elements were also affected by the background and layout of the garden fr om the previous analysis.
