In this study, entrepreneurs are the base for research. The objectives are to understand what relationship exists between biographical characteristics and entrepreneurial drives, as well as psychological characteristics and entrepreneurial drives, to determine whether entrepreneurial drives influence entrepreneurial behavior.
This study uses the statistic software SPSS to analyze the data, with descriptive statistics to explain the traits and the distribution of the data, with correlation analysis to understand correlation among variables, and with ANOVA to ascertain whether there exists a significantly difference in the entrepreneurial drives of various age groups.
The major findings are summarized as follows:
I. Description of entrepreneurs
1. The average age of entrepreneurs of small- and medium-sized enterprises in Taiwan is about 32 years old; most of them are in the range of 21 to 30 years old.
2. The number of male entrepreneurs exceeds that of the female entrepreneurs, with male entrepreneurs accounting for about 80% and female entrepreneurs about 20 %.
3. The entrepreneurs in small and medium enterprises are mostly high school, vocational school and junior collage graduates.
4. Before starting a business, 90% of the entrepreneurs had work experience over three months.
5. Among the entrepreneurs, half of their parents are self-employed.
II. Individual background and entrepreneurial drives
1. Entrepreneurs in different age groups have different drives to undertake the start-up of a business. Young people can accept new things easily, so the urge to start up a business is stronger among young entrepreneurs.
2. Gender does not bear on entrepreneurial drives.
3. There exists a significant relationship between education and entrepreneurial drives. Entrepreneurs with higher educational degrees have stronger entrepreneurial drives.
4. Most entrepreneurs had previous work experiences, and those experiences will motivate them to start up businesses.
5. Self-employed parents serve as a good model for their offspring. This study reveals that parents'' business experience bears positive correlation with their offspring''s entrepreneurial drives.
III. Psychological characteristics and entrepreneurial drives
1. With entrepreneurs, the higher the need for achievement, the stronger the entrepreneurial drives.
2. Entrepreneurs who tend to have high internal locus of control have a stronger urge to start up a business. The reverse is true with entrepreneurs who tend to have high external locus of control.
3. Entrepreneurs with high risk-taking propensity have stronger entrepreneurial drives.
IV. Entrepreneurial drives and entrepreneurial behavior
Entrepreneurs have drives for wealth, status, opportunity, and innovation. These drives have a significant influence on entrepreneurs'' behavior. The stronger these drives are, the more active the entrepreneurial behavior.
