In this study a raingauge network design approach using cluster analysis and the theory of entropy is proposed and applied to Tansui River Basin. Both representative information and redundant information are considered through a repeated ranking procedure. Total information of rainfall of the watershed was determined and used to evaluate the number of stations that are needed to obtain 60%,70%,80%,90%,and 95% of total information. The results exemply the potential use of entropy theory to monitioring network design.
