《駭客任務三部曲》是相當經典的科幻電影，其特點在於除了聲光特效之外，還包含許多宗教與哲學思想。本研究以彼得•紐馬克的溝通翻譯理論為分析原則，探討譯者使用何種策略使譯文字幕的觀眾能接受到與原文字幕觀眾相同的效果，並具體運用Henrik Gottlieb的六種字幕翻譯策略，分析《駭》片中關於非人物性格以及人物性格之語言訊息的中英文字幕。非人物性格特色包括電腦相關專業詞彙、劇情脈絡、電影畫面；人物性格特色包括程式與人類兩種角色所呈現的對白。除此之外，也以Patrick Zabalbeascoa補償理論中的替代策略探討非語言訊息的翻譯。
分析結果顯示，譯者針對非人物與人物性格翻譯所運用的策略大致上可以歸納出一些走向。在非人物性格的翻譯方面：對於原文的電腦專業詞彙大致上使用「轉移」和「壓縮」策略，讓觀眾短時間內瞭解主要概念；牽涉到劇情脈絡的原文則會使用「轉移」策略使譯文完整呈現原文涵義；針對畫面輔助翻譯則應用Zabalbeascoa提出的「替代」策略來處理，使譯文遺漏的元素透過畫面傳達給觀眾，達到溝通效果。在人物性格翻譯方面，譯者使用「重述」策略並盡量用原文和譯文之間具有對等效果的用語來翻譯。因此，譯者分別使用Gottlieb字幕翻譯策略以及Zabalbeascoa的補償策略來處理語言和非語言符號的資訊，達到溝通效果。最後，希望本研究可以為字幕翻譯實務帶來一些啟發和實際的參考價值。

This study aims to examine whether equivalence is achieved between the original English subtitles and the Chinese subtitles in The Matrix Trilogy films. Gottlieb’s six subtitling strategies and Zabalbeacoa’s compensatory strategy are both adopted to analyze the human and non-human characteristics of the films. Human characteristics include program features and human attributes, while non-human characteristics consist of computer-related technical terms, the context, and visual images. This study employs communicative translation method proposed by Peter Newmark to examine whether the meaning influenced by the characteristics mentioned above and the effects emphasized in the original film subtitles are conveyed by the translated Chinese subtitles.
The analysis of the translated subtitles provides four results. To begin with, the strategies of “transfer” and “condensation” are applied to translate computer technical terms; then, the “transfer” strategy is adopted to translate original subtitles which have been influenced by the context. Furthermore, the translator often used the “paraphrase” strategy to render personal characteristics; while finally he substituted images to compensate the verbal subtitles in the original.
The study concludes that Gottlieb’s and Zabalbeascoa’s strategies successfully generate translated subtitles that retain the meaning and effects conveyed by the original film subtitles. It is sincerely hoped that this study can offer practical insights into subtitling translation.
