Ven.Yinshun(印順法師) is a famous and well-respected academic scholar In Taiwan Buddhism. He wrote a lot of well-known and well-spread works. In his articles, he thinks Esoteric Buddhism is Brahamalize and god-vehiclelize. Therefore, his articles are often cited as to oppose Esoteric Buddhism. The thesis of this paper is to express and clarify his views of the Mahayana Buddhism, and in what ways, he has criticism on the history construction of Esoteric Buddhism with his own critical thinking? Is it Tang Micronesia, East Micronesia, Tibetan Buddhism, or the late Indian Esoteric Buddhism of ŚāktaM that Ven.Yinshun had criticism on ?All this will be the key points explored in this paper.
As to the Mahanuttara-yoga of Mahayana Esoteric Buddhism referred to by Ven.Yinshun, it is to prove the Sunyata that is Buddha body, not just the surface characteristics endowed within men and women simultaneously. Besides, in dealing with the Mahayana Esoteric Buddhism, researchers also have considerable different views .This makes this issue more divergent ,complex, and ambiguous . Besides,this paper also explored and clarified the same and different views between the Mahayana Esoteric Buddhism criticized by Ven.Yinshun, and the Tibetan Buddhism. It also shows where the misunderstanding is.
Therefore, the main object and content of this paper come first from dealing with the related works of Ven.Yinshun to have further study. They give statements for the related literature, the development history of Mahayana Buddhism and the Esoteric Buddhism, the Esoteric Buddhist rituals, the corresponding practice of the Mahanuttara-yoga methods; and also the difference between Esoteric Buddhism, and Tibetan Buddhism. It also illustrates what Ven.Yinshun opposes is the "non-Buddhist" part of the Mahayana Esoteric Buddhism or the Tibetan Buddhism.
With the positive attitude and the spirit of "from time to time for Buddhism, from time to time for the people" Ven.Yinshun cultivates a right way for the Buddhism follower .This gives reasons why this paper is worthy of studying. Besides, this paper also further gives explanations and statements for the ambiguous parts of the second-hand information coming from Japan.
