ABSTRACT A "university community" can be regarded as a mix of a university and a community. It represents the total living domain of the people in that location, where the university campus andthe surrounding commercial areas are often the focal points for a university community. However, neither the university authority nor the government has ever paid attention to the required public spaces for recreational activities of members of the university community. Poor management of the public area around the university community has resulted in low quality and unsuitable land usage. Tung-Hai Villas (Hsin-Tung community) is the main student precinct outside the university campus. There are as many students as non-student residents in the area. However, there are veryfew activities that reflect the cultural features of the university community. Many cultural activities have been sacrificed, because either the usable public land is occupied or has not been properly developed. When the public land is privatized or under no proper planning, many outdoor activities that could be available to the university community are seriously reduced. Furthermore, many places traditionally used by the residents as gathering points are disappearingand residents are forced to the edge of the community. Residents are struggling to maintain theirmeeting places by setting up flimsy shelters. All the above demonstrates that the public spatial order of the community needs to be redesigned. The Community Center of the university community should reflect the community members'' trueactivities. The Center should draw the residents'' activities from the edge of the community to thecenter of the community and blend in with students, who are the original people in the inner circle of the community. In Hsin-Tung community, the original community neighborhood relationship is disappearing, because many private properties have been turned to rental and commercial use. Residents have become strangers to each other. It is very difficult to maintain community consciousness among the residents. In addition, university students, who only reside temporarily in the community, do not have a feeling of belonging and recognition of the community. From time to time, students not only hold different views from non-student residents, they stand opposed to the non-student residents. All these phenomena can be improved through the establishment of a community center. Important points covered by this research include: · Redefinition of the role played by the Community Center within the university community. · Study of activities of the university community in relation to public land space. · Formulation of activity sequence and construction of public spatial sequence. · Improvement in the quality of public activity space for the community. Additionally, drawings and collection of basic data for the university community are also important in this research, as no one has ever made such a systematic detailed research and analysis of the Tung-Hai University community before. Some information obtained in this thesiscan be used as a reference for designing. This thesis involved undertaking a wide range of research through a great deal of investigation and analysis of this area. A reserved area of land to be used as a community park for the Hsin-Tung community is taken asthe basis for this design. It is a systematic design for the Community Center and Community Park, and a restructured framework for the public spatial sequence for the university community. A proper footpath from the university campus to the Community Center is also planned. It would be a unique feature-a "cultural path"-for the university community.
