『HO JO KI』(1212) is one of famous Japanese literature. Author, Kamono-Chome ( 1155 ~ 1216), narrated his difficulty youth life and the life after he became a monk. By his writing style, subject matter and conception, this literature is an outstanding autobiography. In the beginning of this book, he wrote: 「Incessant is the change of water where the stream glides on calmly; the spray appears over a cataract, yet vanishes without a moment’s delay. Such is the fate of men in the world and of the houses in which they live」. He made many examples to prove the idea of uncertain life, and he also used a lot of Buddhist vocabulary and thought. Therefore, the title of this paper is 「Disquisition on 『HO JO KI』’s idea of uncertain life and Buddhist thought」. At first, the writer introduced Kamono-Chome’s career and literatures; and then, to canvassed in different edition of『HO JO KI』。 According to writer’s contention, the idea of uncertain life and Buddhist thought are two main topics for 『HO JO KI』. Although those two topics contained a lot of meaning by themselves, in this paper, the writer tried to expatiate on 『HO JO KI』 and refer to Kamono-Chome’s other writings. Also, the writer referred to other scholar’s writing to applaud, to disprove, or to make up Kamono-Chome’s writing; then, it would strengthen the reliability of this paper.
