『紅與黑』是法國十九世紀寫實小說的經典之作。這部小說的副標題為『一八三0記實』，它取材自『法庭時報』所刊載的一篇報導，斯湯達勒在書中所要描述的不僅是一位出生貧窮卻野心勃勃的青年追求名利的過程，透過朱利安的眼光，作者企圖揭露後拿破崙時代整個社會到處充斥著競爭、陰謀和虛偽的黑暗面。
整本小說主要架構在個體和父權社會的衝突上。叛離了真正的父親，朱利安必須面對的是整個父權社會體系的壓制。為了在上流社會爭得一席之地，他必須生活在表象與本質的差距下，學習虛偽，並且與背德為伍。在追求成功的過程中，個人的情感更是不得不淪為晉升上流社會的犧牲品。因此本論文將以『發現自我情感』為研究主題，企圖探索朱利安的感情和心理發展歷程：
第一部分將研究朱利安複雜的個性: 精力旺盛、虛偽和感性。透過他多重人格特質的呈現，我們試圖去了解他內在的矛盾以及他與社會之間的互動關係。第二部分將分析朱利安和兩位女主角─雷娜爾夫人和瑪蒂爾德之間的愛情關係。藉由表情、肢體動作和服飾等符號的傳遞，我們將窺探介於真愛和野心之間的朱利安。第三部分將藉由朱利安這個人物來探討幸福的觀念。在牢裡，他勇於唾棄虛偽，擺脫父權社會對他的控制，對他而言，幸福人生不是建立在權力的追求上，而是在於能夠愛人。他與雷娜爾夫人之間的愛情成為唯一也是最重要的支柱。

Le Rouge et le Noir is a French realistic masterpiece in the nineteenth century. In this novel with a subtitle Chronologie de 1830 inspired by one of the stories in Gazette des Tribunaux, Stendhal not only described the development of a poor but ambitious young man pursuing fame and money, but through Julien’s points of view, revealed the competition, intrigue and hypocrisy spread everywhere in the post-napolean society.
The structure of the novel was based on the conflict between father and son. Having betrayed his real father, Julien had to meet the oppression of the paternal society. In order to gain a place in the upper classes, he had to live under the distance between the appearance and the nature, to learn the hypocrisy and to take up with the cynicism. In the process of seeking success, he sacrificed his personal feelings to promote his status in the upper classes. So, this thesis focuses on “the discovery of self-feelings”, trying to explore Julien’s sentimental and psychological evolution:
The first part studies Julien’s complicated character: energetic, hypocritical, and sentimental. Through his multiple characters, we manage to understand his internal contradiction and his interaction with the society. The second part analyzes the amorous relationship between Julien and the two heroines─Mme de Rênal and Mathilde. By the transmission of his expressions, gestures and the garments, we can see a between-passion-and-ambition Julien. The third part is to use Julien, the figure, to discuss the concept of happiness. In prison, he dared to abandon hypocrisy and to get rid of the paternal society’s influence. He understood the happiness of his life was not based on the chase of the power, but on the love. His love with Mme de Rênal became the only and the most important support of his rest life.
