The focus on demonstratives include its arbitrariness, ambiguity, and dependence in the text, which also cause readers misunderstanding in reading. The thesis seeks to examine and analyze the demonstratives “此Ci"and “彼Bi"which frequently appeared in classical Chinese, and our corpuses is the book “gu wen guan zhi” which include 222 texts. Our findings are listed in the following :
(1) After Warring Period, the syntactic function of “Ci"was mainly Object and Subject, and that of “Bi"is Subject most frequently.
(2) The grammatical meaning of “Ci"and “Bi"include deixis and pronoun. “Ci"referred to person, thing, time, location, and matter, and most of them are generic nouns. “Bi"’s reference was restricted to person, location, and matter, and most of them are specific object.
(3) The pragmatic function of “Ci"and “Bi"are mainly distinction and connection. Their distinctive function Includes entity / abstract, proximity / remote(space distance, time distance, psychological distance), key role / supporting role. When “Ci / Bi"or “Ci X / Bi X"play a role as anaphora or cataphora.
(4) The asymmetry between “Ci"and “Bi"in syntactic function, the grammatical meaning, and the pragmatic function may be explained from cognitive perspective. People understand the world from their own to far around, which resulted in such inguistics phenomenon that we use more proximal demonstrative than remote demonstrative.
