維持口腔健康最重要關鍵是徹底清潔牙齒,牙菌斑指數是口腔衛生重要指標,清除牙菌斑最基本的工具是牙刷,此研究目的將以電動牙刷探討牙刷刷頭大小是否影響牙菌斑清除效果?於此之外,受試者特質與潔牙習慣是否影響刷牙成效?研究中亦予探討。
研究以試驗觀察進行:30位受試者,男性11人,佔36.7%,女性19人,佔63.3%,平均年齡38歲。分二組以大小不同刷頭電動牙刷刷牙2分鐘,刷牙前後記錄牙菌斑指數。
試驗結果發現:整體刷牙後牙菌斑指數與刷牙前有顯著差異,分別使用大小刷頭二組潔牙效果則無顯著差異。性別、年齡,每日刷牙次數、是否規律洗牙、上回洗牙距今時間、來診前是否刷牙、牙齦炎程度、平時是否使用電動牙刷與刷牙前牙菌斑指數皆無顯著差異。曾使用電動牙刷、平時使用電動牙刷,刷牙後潔牙效果也無顯著差異。
刷牙2分鐘後牙菌斑減少顯著,表示刷牙對口腔清潔確實有效;而使用大小刷頭潔牙效果則無顯著差異。雖然去除牙菌斑靠牙刷刷毛接觸牙齒表面,但潔牙觀念、刷毛材質、角度、動作方式等都可能造成影響,刷頭大小於牙菌斑清除效果在此試驗中未有顯著差異。

PURPOSE: Clinical studies have revealed that the importance of improving oral health needed to be emphasized to patients through proper and complete daily oral hygiene practices, specifically plaque removal. Creating the healthy brushing habits was significant to reduce levels of dental plaque. Tooth brushing was the most effective removal of dental plaque, resulting in satisfactory plaque control. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical efficacy of the small and large brush heads of the powered toothbrush, each used for 2 minutes, for efficacy in plaque removal in 30’s adults.
METHODS: The trial was carried out by the observation: Thirty subjects, average age 38 years old, including 11 males (36.7%) and 19 females (63.3%) in generally good health were recruited in this study. All subjects, divided into two groups, were powered toothbrush users, brushing their teeth for 2 minutes. Subjects brushed under supervision with the powered brushes of large brush heads or small ones, assigned for that period of 2 minutes. They were examined for plaque index of pre-brushing and post-brushing to determine the plaque removal efficacy of the respective brush heads.
RESULTS: All 30 randomized subjects completed the study and were fully evaluable. Both the powered brushes with large brush heads vs. small ones in the post-brushing produced statistically significant mean plaque reductions compared to that in the pre-brushing. However, no clinically meaningful differences were found between the powered brushes of the two distinct brush heads tested during the trial with regard to plaque removal. Effective removal of dental plaque or not was not directly connected with the sex, age, the brushing times, clinical teeth cleaning regularly, intervals of scaling, toothbrushing pre-visit, the severity of gingival inflammation, and the toothbrushing experiences with powered toothbrushes.
The powered toothbrush removed significantly more plaque after each used for 2 minutes during the trial. It showed tooth brushing was effective to facilitate the removal of plaque; it made no difference between the powered brushes with large brush heads and small ones. Removal of plaque was completed through the toothbrush in touch with the surfaces of the teeth; furthermore, the concepts for tooth brushing, the materials of brushes, cleaning angles of the teeth, brushing habits may result in various plaque control.
CONCLUSIONS: There were no clinically meaningful differences found between either of the powered toothbrushes tested during the trial with regard to plaque removal.
