Kua, Ki-Hua(1929-2002) is a native of Tzo-ying, Kaohsiung. For half a century, he has been well-known for doing favor to numerous students by his “New English Grammar”. However, in his age of white terror, Kua,Ki-Hua’s experience of being politically oppressed was hardly known. Although oppressed by the nation’s violence, he persisted in the resistance spirit of the intellectuals and actively participated in the social, democratic movement, hosted the seasonal magazine, ”Taiwan Culture”, published “the Library Catalogue of Formosan culture”, deeply cultivated Taiwan culture, and promoted Taiwan consciousness without sparing any effort. Having gone through the pain of going into prison also evoked his creative inspiration, from the novel, ”The Native Place of the Southern Country”, the poetry collection, “Mother's Earnest Wish” and “The Call of Old Home” to his memoirs, ”Taiwan Prison Island”, etc. In the works of Taiwan prison literature, one finds the significant meaning of the age. However, up to the present, researches on him lack a complete, integrated system and discussion and need to be improved. This author hopes to understand Kua,Ki-Hua and the spirit and characteristics of his works, especially after going through suffering, by means of works collection, sorting out related materials, coupled with interviews, from his growing background and age and prison experience and then give his creation a proper evaluation and fixation, expecting to let more people understand and witness the fortitude of the two-age Kua,Ki-Hua and confirm his contribution to Taiwan culture and his achievement in the history of Taiwan literature.
This thesis is divided into 6 chapters. Chapter 1, introduction, generally introduces the motive, and purpose, method and scope of the research and exploration of literature. Chapter 2 writes about Kua,Ki-Hua’s life. Chapter 3 illustrates Kua,Ki-Hua’s publication career. Chapter 4 explores Kua,Ki-Hua’s poetry. Chapter 5 comments on Kua,Ki-Hua’s novel. Chapter 6 discusses Kua,Ki-Hua’s memoirs and letters to his home from the prison. Chapter 7, conclusion, oversees the research of each chapter. He is not only a politically oppressed English teacher, publisher, literary writer, but also a model of Taiwan spirit.
