在數學教育界中，雖然有關思維的書籍與研究很多，但關於學生在實際數學課堂中，其數學思維的啟動及轉化現象仍屬於待研究的階段。本研究的主要目的在探討國中生在「用配方法解一元二次方程式」單元之學習歷程中，數學思維之啟動、轉化現象，以及這些現象是如何影響實際課堂上的數學學習，並進一步探討學生數學思維得以或無法啟動或轉化的可能因素，以及教師的教學對學生數學思維活動的影響。本研究是採用「自然探究」的質性研究方法，進入實地數學課堂中直接進行觀察、蒐集資料，並對資料進行「歸納分析」。研究樣本包含台北縣市四個班級，共146位學生，研究者並實際對其中一個班級進行「用配方法解一元二次方程式」的教學。
關於思維的啟動與轉化現象，本研究主要分成「數學心理型思維」與「數學概念型思維」兩類進行探討，研究結果有許多重要的發現。在「數學心理型思維」上，本研究發現學生在等價、邏輯、微觀全貌、形式程序等思維的運作上，皆受到教師教學的影響而產生啟動或轉化的現象；在程序性套裝思維上，許多學生也由於教師教學過度強調程序性而阻礙數學思維的恰當發展；同時教師在上課中所強調的包裹思維，學生在學習前卻多已具備。
在數學概念型思維上，本研究將配方法學習歷程分成七個子部分進行探討。研究發現透過偏向講述的教學方式，學生可建立用配方法解一元二次方程式的思維；研究也發現，這些思維在面臨較陌生的一元二次方程式時，無法恰當運作。除此，本研究發現，有時教師在教學歷程中所欲傳達的數學思維與學生實際啟動或轉化的數學思維並不一致。
