Many studies showed that the capacities of airspace, airfield, or air traffic control were or would be the constraints for the development of civil aviation. Taiwan also faces such a problem. How to effectively improve the operating efficiency of airfield and airspace becomes an important issue. "Airport Capacity Enhancements" has been one of important research issues. The operations of integrated airspace and airfield system are very complicated, and thus, an evaluation tool is very critical for determining the locations of bottlenecks and their underlying causes. This research tries to study the characteristics of SIMMOD. SIMMOD is a microscopic simulation model. It has been widely used in the world. It aims to analyze the performances of airspace and airfield. This research will first tries to understand SIMMOD'''' s underlying theory and logic, including the definition of aircraft, the building of airspace and airfield networks, the aircraft moving rules, and airfield operations. The operations of Sung Shan Airport will be well studied and, the data associated with runway, taxiway, gates, airlines, flights, aircraft, and the arrival or departure procedures will be collected for model validation. The applicability of SIMMOD in Taipei Flight Information Region will be evaluated. This research also discusses runway capacity under different aircraft separations, aircraft mix index and percent arrivals. The results of this research will be very helpful for building the data- base of air transportation in Taiwan, especially in the areas of airspace and airfield. In addition, this research can provide the insights for airport capacity enhancements.
