宿舍環境對住宿學生的影響既深又廣,高密度居住的情況,引發許多環境心理學家以擁擠、隱私為主題的田野研究。本研究以19位男女受訪者為主角,探討他/她們在多人共處一室生活的寢室空間中所遭遇的困境,及如何以短、長期的調節行動、機制來加以因應。
寢室場所中的衝突來自於室友間相互的干擾,干擾則源自於他人與自我間的差異,而高度鄰近、通透、狹小的空間特性,則扮演催化的背景條件。當個人需要寢室作為確保獨處、孤立的後臺空間時,卻常因為其他室友的在場,而面臨感官刺激、資訊失控及行為上的不自由、不確定、不安全感等干擾。因應干擾的方式則相當多元異質,短期而言,習慣、忍耐、出走,是反求諸己的內斂方式。而暗示、請求、表態、邀約,則是訴諸於人際溝通互動。還可能訴諸於團體公約的制定,或是藉由空間擺設上的隔離/聯盟來面對問題。諸多策略各有其適用的事件、對象及必須付出的代價、風險。
就長期而言,室友間關係親疏的變化是影響共處一室感受的關鍵機制。當室友關係愈親密時,互惠互動的增加、差異的融合消解,及互動彈性化三個向度的發展,使全體室友們能同時向最舒適、穩定的平衡點趨近。最後,則針對使用者個人、空間設施、管理機制這三方面提出亡羊補牢的建議。
