由於受到台幣升值以及國內各項生產成本上升等因素，自1980年代中期開始，台灣的製造業即陸續向勞動成本低廉的東南亞地區進行投資；此一趨勢更在1990年代初期政府開放大陸投資政策之後愈形劇烈，導致國內產業因大量從事直接對外投資而引起空洞化之隱憂。當然，在總體環境下因生產成本的不利影響、或者為求突破貿易障礙而赴開發中國家進行直接投資，固然會透過取代出口或是回銷台灣而對國內生產造成負面影響；但是，為了積極開拓海外市場或爭取境外生產資源的直接對外投資，不僅對國內生產不會造成任何負面影響，甚至能夠進一歩地帶動且提高國內生產，更遑論所謂的空洞化。
　　本研究的主要目的即在探討不同形態的直接對外投資其對本國產業所造成之影響。有別於傳統文獻對於空洞化的檢視大多由製造業占GDP之比重、或製造業就業人口占總就業人口比例等廣義指標，我們嘗試建立一理論模型，從中探討直接對外投資對國內實質生產的影響，並利用製造業Panel Data進行實證分析， 期望藉由釐清對外投資與國內生產之間的關係來重新検視對外投資與空洞化的問題。實證結果顯示，對外直接投資對於國內製造業的實質產出水準及生產力，確有不利影響。但在進一歩區分對外投資動機後可發現，積極開拓海外市場或爭取境外生產資源的「擴張型對外投資」，其對於國內產出的成長及生產力之提升有極顯著的正面助益；反之，為因應總體環境惡化而被迫將生產活動移往海外的「防禦型對外投資」，將不利於國內產出的成長及生產力之提升。
