This study looks into Taiwanese attitudes toward gay marriage by analyzing the corpus of The Taipei Times and The China Post from 2000 to 2016. By examining the verbs before the keyword ‘gay marriage’ and ‘same-sex marriage’ I was able to learn about people’s attitudes toward gay marriage during a certain period of time. In general, words such as oppose, against, protest, resist, and rebel before the keyword suggested a negative attitude. In contrast, words like agree, permit, allow, approve, consent, and so on indicated a positive and accepting attitude. The corpus illustrates the change of concepts about gay marriage in Taiwan, allowing us to clearly see Taiwanese people’s attitudes toward gay marriage in different periods of time and how those attitudes have changed over time. In addition to looking at keywords, I also examined the surrounding context to better understand the period in question; this made it possible to grasp people’s attitudes toward gay marriage then. Using this corpus, we can learn more about people’s attitudes toward same-sex marriage and understand why Taiwanese people change their minds over time. Keywords: a corpus-based analysis, gay marriage, same-sex marriage, attitude, The China Post, The Taipei Times.
