Studies have found that persons with social anxiety are associated with high level of self-focused attention from the observer's perspective and yet lower level of self-acceptance of negative emotions and empathy. Also, maladaptive self-focused attention is considered to be developed into morbid self-absorption. The main purposes of this study are to explore the relationships among social anxiety, self-focused attention, self-acceptance and empathy in Chinese college students, and further to explore the role self-focused attention playing as a mediator in these variables. In this current study, data were collected from 107 college students. Social Interaction Anxiety Scale, Self-Focused Attention Scale, Self-Acceptance Subscale in the Scales of Psychological Well-Being Revised, and Interpersonal Reactivity Index were used as measures. Pearson’s correlation and Sobel test were conducted to test the hypotheses. Results show that the component of self-arousal attention in self-focused attention, self-acceptance, and the component of personal distress in empathy play key roles in social anxiety. This study indicates social anxiety treatment might focus more on certain key target factors.
